What's On (Dubai)

A barber for almost 30 years, born in Yorkshire, England

- JULIAN COLCLOUGH

What sort of haircuts are guys asking for when they sit in your chair these days?

They still want short at the back and sides. But it’s nice to see the crop with a blunt fringe coming back in too.

What’s the best thing about your barbershop?

It looks different from other Dubai barbershops. Plus, all the barbers have at least 12 years’ experience and we take our time to make sure the customer is happy.

Tell us about the cool photos on the wall in the Media City shop – where did you find them?

Some of them, like the guy being shaved on the street in Palestine in the early part of the last century, came from eBay. There’s an old family photo of my great great grandfather who came to Yorkshire from America with a bullet hole in his leg.

Which photo is your favourite?

Probably the ones of my musical heroes like Gil ScottHeron and Jim Morrison. But I do like the sheepish mug shot of Hugh Grant after he was arrested in America.

What kind of music do you play in the shop?

We like old reggae and jazz. If I had to choose a band that we play a lot that defines the shop it would be Fat Freddy’s Drop – modern but timeless. You want to relax when you’re having your hair cut and not be aurally insulted by a load of modern top 40 nonsense.
