ROMAN RUINS
There are a dizzying array of Roman and Byzantine ruins scattered across Tyre and it is for these that the majority of foreign tourists visit. Aqueducts, a bathhouse, paved roads, a triumphal arch, a necropolis, geometrical Roman and Byzantine mosaics and, arguably the most impressive of them all, a hippodrome, are sprinkled liberally across the city. The latter has been a world heritage site since 1979 and could hold 20,000 spectators in its heyday. Much of what’s on offer can be found in the Al-Mina and Al-Bass archaeological sites, which are situated just behind the Old City. Entry to each site is Dhs15 or Dhs8.50 for students.
