OSTROG MONASTERY

-

Widely considered a miracle by locals, given that no-one knows how it came into being, the spectacular Ostrog Monastery sits on the side of a sheer vertical cliff. A sacred pilgrimage for Orthodox Christians and various other religions, the sparkling white of the building is offset by the lush green of the rolling Zeta valley surrounds, while inside, the walls are covered in antique painted frescoes.

Top Tip: You’ll need to dress modestly to be allowed inside the building but guests of all faiths are welcomed, and the monastery even provides bedding for those wanting to stay overnight in the summer months. Organised tours can be found from most popular coastal towns and cost around Dhs105, though more intrepid explorers could take the train to Ostrog and then tackle the one-hour hike upwards.
