DHOW AND ANCHOR

Has the OG of the British gastropub scene still got it?

-

ubai was plunged into lockdown just a week after Jumeirah Beach Hotel’s flagship British pub had unveiled its impressive new extension and makeover. So, it’s time to head back to the Dhow and Anchor (D&A) and check out what’s new.

In a smart move, they’ve added an upstairs, which brings in an additional bar and plenty more dining space that’s ideal for private parties or match days.

The terrace, which boasts panoramic views of the Burj Al Arab, has also been

Drenovated and has reopened this month.

Once we’re seated in a cosy corner, we order some drinks from the Anchor Hour menu, and go straight in for the roast of the day (Dhs125), and the Wagyu burger (Dhs105), with a side of onion rings (Dhs10).

The roast dinner does not disappoint. Crispy potatoes, sweet roasted carrots and parsnips, gooey cauliflower cheese and a generous helping of beef. It’s only the Yorkshire pudding that doesn’t quite make the grade. It’s tough and chewy, even when soaked in lashings of the delicious gravy.

The Wagyu burger is served in an American-style bun with red onion marmalade and tomato relish. Top marks here – it’s nicely put together and easy to eat and it doesn’t fall apart in our hands.

But it’s not the mains that are the star of the show on the day, it’s the desserts. The sticky toffee pudding (Dhs55) with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream is to die for and we’re left feeling all warm and gooey, just like the pudding itself.

Then there’s the vanilla cheesecake (Dhs55). A firm biscuit base, cream cheese which is slightly charred on top, and sweet brandy-soaked prunes on the side. It’s like Christmas has come early.

We’ll be back pronto to enjoy a cold one on the terrace.
