220 Triathlon

ED’S LETTER

- Helen Webster, Editor

Triathlon really is like no other sport. Sounds like an obvious statement to make, but just think about what’s involved for a second. First up, you have to train in three different disciplines, which also means finding your way to a swimming pool, a lake, a gym or decent roads for running and cycling. Not only that, but you also need to slot in some tri-specific skills such as brick sessions and transition practice, plus (if you’re anything like most triathletes I know) washing all your kit each week can sometimes seem like the fourth discipline! With this in mind, it’s no wonder then that the most common question we hear from readers here at 220 Triathlon is ‘How do I find the time to train?!’. After all, we’re not elite athletes – we have busy lives with careers and families to look after and let’s be honest, there are always going to be those days when real life takes over and that three-hour bike you had planned becomes an hour on the turbo before rushing off to something perhaps less fun, but more urgent!

Well, we figured there’s no better way to learn how to do it than from some of the best. So from p42 we asked some of the busiest – and most successful – age-group triathletes out there how they do it. From a lawyer to a busy parent, they share the sessions and time-saving tricks that have helped them to victory in every distance up to Ironman. As for my best tip? I find always having kit with you at work or when away from home really helps. Then if the day starts to run away with you and it looks like an evening session might not happen, then you can always move it to lunchtime – or use the commute home to sneak in a run or bike. Something’s often better than nothing!

Also keeping us busy this month in the 220 office has been a pretty exciting project. From next issue (on sale 29th March) look out for the new improved 220 Triathlon, as we’re giving your favourite mag a whole new look with more training advice, more gear and (in short!) more of everything you need to nail your triathlon goals. See p138 to find out more and to make sure you don’t miss out, why not turn to p102 to subscribe? In the meantime, enjoy the issue!
