IN THE CLUB

-

I just wanted to write in and say hallelujah for Martyn Brunt and his beautifully-timed ‘10 Reasons to Join a Tri Club’ feature [issue 335, March].

I’d been umming and ahhing about joining my local club for a good six months – was I at that level yet? Would I be welcomed? Could my wallet handle all the new kit I would inevitably have to buy because of major peer envy?! But the day after having read his hilarious-yet-ultimately-informative piece, I went along to my first club meeting and knew within the first few minutes that I’d made the right decision.

I was one of three ‘newbies’ to join that week, and having already done one season of triathlon – two sprints and an Olympic – I wasn’t even the most ‘novice’ there. Not that that would have mattered,, because sessions are catered to all ability levels, helping build confidence from the get-go.

I’m now in a training group for ‘middle-distance hopefuls’ – my name for us – and just as Martyn experienced after having joined his club, I’ve somehow signed up for TWO 70.s this year!

So thank you Martyn, and 220, for giving me that final nudge I needed. I’ve only been a tri club member for less than two weeks but already I can’t imagine life without it!

Let’s hope your example inspires many more to take that first step towards their first tri club meeting and discover a bunch of like-minded “nutters”, as Martyn so affectionately called them, who they can share their many and varied tri adventures with.
