EUGENE’S KEY SESSIONS
I try and see my swim, bike and run sessions as exercising rather than training. With this mindset I don’t get too upset if I’m not able to complete a particular session due to unforeseen factors.
Keeping a sense of perspective is essential and not getting frustrated if training has to be skipped is really important for household harmony. After all, triathlon and training aren’t the most important things in the world… but aren’t far off!
THE SWIM
Time-crunched sessions should be uncomplicated and flexible. My swim session involves smashing out a 400m while focusing on good technique and form, particularly when I’m starting to fatigue.
THE BIKE
The bike session involves riding for the amount of time I have, but when I hit the hills I remain seated and push a big gear.
THE RUN
I incorporate fartleks into my run commute. I either pick gates or a tree to sprint for, then recover. The beauty of triathlon is the flexibility of being able to train when you can.
