PICK YOUR SHOE

220’s resident run coach and multiple ITU world championship winning tri legend Spencer Smith is here with some tips for choosing your perfect race shoes…

-

SOME RUNNERS WILL

use the same pair of shoes for training and racing, and in theory that’s fine if you feel very comfortable in your training shoes.

WHAT I’D SUGGEST

is having two of the same training pairs of shoes on rotation so they don’t become too tired or worn. If you do prefer a lighter racing shoe, again buy a training pair at the same time to prolong the life of both.

HOW LONG YOUR

shoes should last is always a moot point, because some runners are much harder on their shoes than others. I always make some notes when my shoes are changed, and carefully note their appearance if I notice the slightest hint of a breakdown in the materials.

IF I NOTICE

any niggles or pain, I change them immediately. I’d again recommend having two pairs on rotation to alleviate the problem of shoes wearing down too quickly, as in the long run it’s more economical.

I NEVER SAY

to my athletes ‘this is the best shoe’, as my race shoe of choice may be best for my weight and running style, but this may not be the case for others. It’s important to pick your running shoes carefully, but, remember, nobody knows your body better than you.

A RUNNING EXPERT

may give you great advice, but ultimately your body is what gives you the most guidance. Listen to it!
