Profile Design’s FC35 has lost the Velcro for 2017 and instead has fully locking clips that snap onto your bars, which holds the device in place nicely. But we felt there were opportunities missed to improve it further, such as the computer mount and nutrition storage section. For such a hi-tech piece of kit it’s a shame that rubber bands are responsible for holding both your computer and nutrition in place, and when you’re down to your last gel it’s highly likely to pop out when you hit bumpy tarmac. We had to stop to retrieve a gel on multiple occasions on our test rides, and while we lay a good proportion of the blame with Bristol and North Somerset Councils, we’d recommend a good top tube storage pack instead of using this section in a race. Our computer didn’t feel totally secure, but you can use any brand and the placement is perfect, right in your line of sight. (Profile Design would have to go down the Garmin-only route like XLab to incorporate a more secure built-in mount.) We managed to get about 650ml of fluid in the FC35, and the flip-up straw is fast and easy to use. What’s more, you can push a bottle into the port to fill it up – perfect for long-course races.
