Ashmei’s Ultimate Softshell

Stop the wind, cold and rain this off-season with a comfy, warm and windproof softshell run jacket. And one that looks good to boot...

-

FABRIC

A softshell jacket should be windproof and water-resistant (the Ashmei here is, unusually for a softshell, mostly waterproof), as well as providing some reflectivity and, importantly, breathability for when the temperatures and intensity rise.

ZIP GARAGE

It drives us crazy how many brands neglect this (especially on trisuits), but a full-length cover behind the zip or a garage at the neck to stop rubbing from the zipper is a key factor for comfort. Also look for chafe-free bonded seams and a plush collar for added usability.

ZIPPER

Like the seams, the main frontal zipper should prevent any water intrusion and stay chafe-free. The slider should be big enough to grab while cycling and also grippy in the rain. A fulllength cover behind the zip or a garage at the neck to stop rubbing is also key.

VENTILATION

Breathability in a softshell jacket is a huge improvement over a hardshell. Much of this is down to the fabric and a lack of hardshell coating, but also the ventilation provided by perforated strips or mesh panels along the spine and under the armpits.

POCKETS

Run jacket pockets should be easy to access on the move, sizeable enough for nutrition and a phone, but not too big that they become loose and floaty when full. A zipped opening is preferable, with an easy-to-access zipper, especially if you’re wearing gloves.
