Now in its 10th year, this Kentbased event has become a firm favourite on the triathlon calendar. Not only does it offer a glorious historical backdrop and spectacular courses, it’s also family-friendly. There aren’t many meetings that offer races for everyone, so I highly recommend it to athletes of all ages.

The swim starts at Hever Castle’s stunning Loggia, which sets the scene for the whole race. As the water glistens in the morning sun, you can see right down the lake to the first few buoys. Although the course is only one lap, it isn’t a simple out-and-back – after passing the buoys, you swim around the Japanese Tea House and through the channel to the side of the lake. In training, remember to practise sighting so that you don’t go off-course. See session 1.

Exiting the water, there’s a run up to transition. It doesn’t look very far but it’s all uphill, so take a few seconds to get your breath back.

The cycle leg takes in some of the most scenic areas of the Kent countryside, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. Pretty it may be, but it’s a testing course with few flat sections. The hills aren’t long but they’re short and sharp, so you feel the burn in your legs. Try to take a minute to look around you, though, as the views are fantastic. See session 2.

For the most part, the run is off-road through the castle grounds, surrounding fields and local villages. It’s stunning, and at times when you’re running through the maize fields, you feel that you could be anywhere in the world. See sessions 3 and 4.

Nutrition is key for this event, especially if you’re doing the Gauntlet; you’ll find the brand High5 at stations. It could also be quite hot, so make the most of the water stations to keep fully hydrated. Next month: Breca swimrun Coniston, 6-7 October 2018.
