With events in Romania, Montenegro and the Azores, race series organiser Ocean Lava are one for testing out under-the-radar tri destinations. That theme continues with their Réunion Island venture, set on the volcanic speck of paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean (and owned by France). Yet the race is far from an end-ofseason picnic, with a 3km sea swim, 120km of riding in the island’s rolling hinterlands and a 23km trail run taking you to an altitude of 2,400m. oceanlava.com
