220 TRIATHLON.. Happy Anniversary

-

We’ve been in triathlon since 1985. We have seen changes that have shaped the future and growth of our sport. We have seen technology driven by triathlon, bikes, wheels, carbon, tri bars, and of course the wetsuit. We have seen crazy ideas come and go as quick as the companies who saw triathlon as a way of making a quick buck. We have seen a paradigm shift in the sport when draft-legal was introduced, and we have seen the Olympic Games include triathlon in its program to celebrate a new millennium. We have seen the stars of the sport race, retire and grow old, taking up new posts of coaching and shaping the future direction of triathlon. We have seen athletes become renowned for their famous battles and their ultimate collapses. We have seen associations become federations and CEO’s change many times. We have seen medals on our own soil, yet our weather should not really allow this success. We have seen countries thrive in triathlon and Yorkshire become a hotbed of talent. We have seen triathlon become one of the fastest growing sports of our time and challenge the thoughts of it not being for the mass market. We have seen our capital cities of the world opened to this new sport and added it to our ‘life bucket list’. We have seen a small race on a small island become the biggest race on ‘the big island’. And, we have seen a youngster with Cerebral Palsy named Bailey finish a triathlon to more than 65 million views, while another pairing Dick and Rick pushed and towed their way to triathlon notoriety for doing the impossible. While we have seen all this, one thing has never changed, our beloved 220 Triathlon magazine. We remember the first issues, the excitement of getting the specially saved copy from the newsagents, the anticipation of the news stories and images of the sport from around the world. This was pre-internet... This was pre TV coverage. 220 TRIATHLON WAS, AND STILL IS, THE CONSTANT OF OUR TRIATHLON WORLD.
