RAC E INSIDER

The newest Outlaw Half tri event, Outlaw X, has the potential to be a fast course. Here’s what to expect…

-

The single-lap, 1.2-mile swim course features seven turn buoys, so it’s more complicated than the Outlaw Half Nottingham course. It’s very important to visualise the course in advance, because it could be possible to cut part of the course, which would result in a DSQ – but be aware that the Outlaw course marshalls are extremely helpful and will do everything they can to make sure you don’t miss a section of the swim! See session 1.

The swim exit will be a temporary ramp with event crew available to help you out. If you ever suffer any sort of dizziness after swimming, be prepared mentally to climb up a short, sharp ramp followed by a short run to transition. The course features 1,980ft of climbing (compared to 1,703ft at Nottingham and 2,115ft at Outlaw Half Holkham). It’s fast and timetrial bike friendly. Note the main climb of any note is 5.5 miles into the course, Walesby Hill, so you need to be ready for it early. The climb covers an elevation of 200ft in 0.6 miles. See session 2.

At mile 28 you’ll hit the only other hills of any note on the course. They’re part of a rolling section along the A631 where you get plenty of run up to any hills and nice rolls down the other side. There’s a fairly technical descent at Drakeholes. This is the section of the course that needs maximum concentration

and awareness. See session 3.

The run course is mostly on tarmac, but also some well-kept farm tracks. If it’s dry, the course is suitable for racing flats, but keep an eye on the weather in case there’s a prolonged period of wet weather. The 13.1-mile run course has 656ft of climbing compared with the very flat Outlaw Half Nottingham (333ft), but there’s slightly less undulation than there is at Holkham. The course covers a figure of eight path and features some stunning views of Thoresby Hall. See session 4. Next month: Bedford Autodrome Duathlons on 13 October.
