Planning a Perfect kitchen layout

Looking to update? Follow Lucy and Andrew Smith’s lead and plan a practical scheme

-

Designing your dream kitchen from scratch is an exciting yet daunting prospect. Careful planning is the key to success, backed up with plenty of expert advice to ensure the end result is a practical space the whole family will want to spend time in.

Ask the experts

If the kitchen you have isn’t as spacious as you would like, consider the potential of increasing the room’s square footage by reconfiguring the space. If you do decide to steal space from a hallway, utility room or garage, consult an architect. Lucy and Andrew visited their architect’s home to get an idea of his style before instructing him.

Unless you are buying direct from the manufacturer, it’s hard to beat a dedicated kitchen designer for in-depth knowledge on the latest appliances and materials. Book a consultation with at least three companies to make sure they understand your needs before

committing. Ask family, friends and even your builder if they can make any personal recommendations.

Practical decisions

Begin by taking into account immovable features like windows and doors, then work out how your cabinetry can be configured. Aim to create a working triangle, with the sink, cooker and fridge in close proximity. Also think about the use of each area; Lucy and Andrew chose an island to define separate zones in their open-plan room.

It’s the finer details, such as worksurfaces, flooring and appliances that can make a kitchen work. Before you meet with a designer, decide on your priorities to avoid going over budget. Don’t get blinded by high-tech kit; decide precisely which gadgets you can or can’t live without. If you prefer to go solo to save money, companies such as Ikea offer free 3D planning tools. Take in your measurements and a kitchen consultant will help with plans.
