908/02 LONGTAIL SPYDER HEADLINES APRIL’S BROAD ARROW PORSCHE SALE
Broad Arrow Auctions has announced an exclusive Porsche-only auction in partnership with Air|water, the brainchild of Luftgekühlt founder and former Porsche works driver, Patrick Long. The event will take place on Saturday 27th April in Costa Mesa, California, and will feature Porsches of all eras.
An early highlight consigned to the sale is the pictured 1969 908/02 Langheck Flunder Spyder (chassis 908/02-005). Boasting an impressive works and ex-works competition record, the car was driven in period by many famous factory speed merchants, including Vic Elford, Richard Attwood, Helmut Marko, Gérard Larrousse and Rudi Lins. Competing against flat-twelvepowered 917s on behalf of the Martini International Racing Team, this 908’s consistent speed allowed it to secure third overall and first in class at the epic 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours, ensuring a podium sweep for Porsche in one of the competition’s defining outings.
The three-litre Porsche competed successfully in many of the other keystone championship events of the day, including the 12 Hours of Sebring, as well as 1,000km races at Spa, the Nürburgring and Brands Hatch. Also, 908/02-005 was caught on camera during the filming of Steve Mcqueen’s Le Mans movie, cementing the car’s place in popular culture.
Part of a significant Porsche race car collection for the past decade, 908/02-005 is one of the undisputed cornerstones of the brand’s endurance racing legacy. The price? Broad Arrow has listed the car with an estimate of $4,750,000$5,750,000
The auction will feature approximately seventy Porsches, similar to the quota presented at Broad Arrow’s Porsche 75th Anniversary Auction, held in 2023 at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The event, hosted in association with Porsche Cars North America, proved an outstanding success, with total sales in excess of twenty million dollars and a ninetythree percent sell-through rate.
“The Broad Arrow team is thrilled to partner with Patrick Long, Jeff Zwart and the Air|water team to host the first-ever auction with Luftgekühlt,” says Alexander Weaver, Senior Car Specialist and Head of Private Sales for Broad Arrow Auctions. “We see great synergy between the two brands and look forward to celebrating all things Porsche with one of the most loyal and die-hard enthusiast bases in the collector car industry.” Patrick Long echoed Weaver’s statement. “I’ve known many of the Broad Arrow principals and its founding members for years. Jeff and I look forward to adding this new interactive component to Air|water events and are excited to see what other significant lots are highlighted in the lead up to the sale.”
In January, Porsche Club of America (PCA) announced Hagerty and Broad Arrow as the official insurance and auction partners for key PCA national events. Broad Arrow kickstarted its 2024 auction calendar with the company’s second annual event at The Amelia. Taking place March 1st-2nd at The Ritz Carlton (Amelia Island, Florida), the sale featured approximately 150 exceptional collector cars ranging from pre-war classics to modern supercars.
