Opposition to ‘green space’ sell-off to create car park

-

RESIDENTS have spoken out over council plans to sell a small piece of public land for the expansion of a car park.

Hyndburn council is planning to sell around 300 square metres of public space on the corner of Moscow Mill Street and Union Road in Oswaldtwistle.

The land, which is currently home to a raised flower bed and three benches, is set to become part of the adjoining car park of Oswaldtwistle Mills Shopping Village.

Stephen Foster, of Spring Hill Road, is opposed to the loss of space.

He said: “It is a very industrial area, and this is the only green space nearby, and it also provides a safe haven for schoolchildren trying to cross the busy road.

“At the very most, the land will only be enough for about six car parking spaces. It seems a bit of a waste.”

A Hyndburn council spokesman said: “The council confirms that it is considering disposing of the land for car parking to support local businesses. Any objections made to the proposed disposal will be considered carefully before the council decides how to proceed.”
