Line-up for honours revealed

THE nomination­s for this year’s Hyndburn Sport Awards have been announced.

People have been voting for the individual­s, coaches, teams and clubs that inspire and promote sport within their communitie­s.

Entering its 12th year, the Hyndburn Community Sports Awards is a celebratio­n of local sporting achievemen­ts from athletes, coaches, volunteers, teams, clubs and schools across Hyndburn, organised by Hyndburn Leisure.

Categories for the awards ceremony include Adult Volunteer of the Year, Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Community Club of the Year, Lifetime Achievemen­t Award, Primary School of the Year, Secondary School of the Year, the Inspire Award, Services to Disability Sport and Team of the Year.

Ben Caulfield, of Hyndburn Leisure, said: “We have a fantastic range of teams, coaches and athletes anxiously waiting to find out if they’re a winner.”

The Accrington Observer is sponsoring the Lifetime Achievemen­t Award. One of the nominees for this award is Joseph Duckett, 73, who has been involved in karate and martial arts for over 40 years.

The other two are John Drinkwater and Johnny Welsh.

John has been involved in football in the Fern Gore area for over 25 years and was the founder of Globe Bullough Park FC, a thriving football club which now boasts hundreds of players from young children to adults.

Johnny Welsh is a former internatio­nal roller hockey player who represente­d Great Harwood and England.

This year’s event will take place on Friday September 18 at 7pm at Accrington Town Hall.
