THREE apartment blocks are set to be built on the site of a former council car park.

The 14-flats scheme for Wellington Street in Accrington has been given the green light by Hyndburn councillors at a planning committee meeting.

Matthew Wyatt, of JWPC town planners and acting on behalf of applicant AJP Surveyors, told the meeting there was a ‘need for apartments’ in the area and they would ‘provide good quality accommodation at rates affordable to people who live here’.

Mr Wyatt said the flats would be rented out by AJP Surveyors based in Burnley.

The site was last used as a private car park at a Lancashire County Council-run day centre for people with learning difficulties.

One objection was submitted to the council citing over development, loss of privacy and the proximity of the apartments to a local nursery.

Councillor Kath Pratt said she had ‘serious concerns’ and said the area would be ‘seriously overdeveloped’.

She added: “We don’t need any more flats, as we can’t get rid of the ones we already have in the borough.”

RESIDENTS are being invited to talk about policing issues in the borough with Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw.

The ‘Let’s Talk Policing’ roadshow will arrive at the Tesco Extra Accrington store on August 17 from 11.30am to 2pm. Mr Grunshaw said: “I want to engage with people about the service they expect and need.”

PERSIMMON Homes Lancashire has submitted a full planning application to Hyndburn council for the building of nine two-bedroom apartments and associated parking at Hambledon Mill, Marlborough Road, Accrington.
