Students scale new heights at their high school induction week

-

VOLCANO making and a large climbing wall were some of the activities on offer to new students set to start at Norden High School.

Year six pupils from nearby primary schools travelled to their new secondary school in Rishton for a week-long ‘transition programme’.

The induction week saw youngsters take part in lessons, meet new friends, find their way around and meet new staff.

It culminated in children having a try at a large climbing wall with everyone having a few chances to get to the top.

Garry Easton, transition leader, said: “It was fantastic to see the smiles on the faces of one or two pupils who were reluctant even to get into the harnesses at first.

The pupils spent time in the science labs researching volcanoes and then all had the chance to make their own volcano.

The completed volcanoes then ‘erupted’ when school staff added hydrogen peroxide to yeast, which had been activated with hot water and washing up liquid.

Claire Munroe, the marketing officer at Norden, said: “They have been given great preparation for high school and should feel fully confident about their knowledge of the building, the staff and the new friends they have already made.”
