Accrington Food and Drink Festival.

Where / when is it?:

10am to 4pm on Saturday, June 4, in Accrington town centre.

What does it involve?:

Over 75 stalls of fine food and drink from Lancashire and beyond! An internatio­nal food market along Broadway and a regional food market outside the Market Hall will bring a variety of flavours to the event. Live cookery demonstrat­ions in the theatre kitchen on Broadway, including a demo by celebrity chef Richard Fox, will be a focal point for the day. As well as all the flavours of the food festival, there’s plenty to watch too. Celebratin­g the Accrington Pals centenary, a World War 2 re-enactment will take place in St. James’ Church grounds at 1pm. There’s also the chance to see a classic MkIX Spitfire plane outside the Town Hall, celebratin­g the 80th anniversar­y of the RAF’s iconic Battle of Britain fighter’s first flight. Sticking with the wartime theme, student chefs from North Lancs Training Group will demonstrat­e how to make the wartime classic trench stew, serving it up with turnip bread in a World War 2 inspired field kitchen within St James’ Church ground.

Who is it suitable for?:

The whole family. The Cakeliciou­s children’s cake decorating competi- tion in Accrington Market Hall will give little ones the chance to get creative. Bugs are the theme of this year’s competitio­n, run by tutors and students from the new Roots Restaurant at Accrington & Rossendale College. It’s free to enter and one lucky winner will receive a sweet hamper from Sweet Treat Designs on Water Street.

Entry to the food festival is completely free. Last year the event brought 10,000 visitors to Accrington town centre and this year’s event is set to build on that success. Sponsors of the event Simon Jersey will inviting festival goers to join their Ride To Rio challenge at the Accrington Food & Drink Festival. As creators of the suits to be worn by Team GB during Rio 2016, they will be encouragin­g local people to join them on the journey to the Olympic Games. Simon Jersey will have two exercise bikes within the Arndale Centre and will be encouragin­g visitors to help pedal the 9,395km between Accrington and Rio.
