Bunting is out for Queen’s 90th
GROUPS are coming together across the borough to stage special events to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in style.
The monarch’s landmark birthday is being commemorated with street parties, summer fetes, and even World War Two war re-enactments.
Accrington train station will be hosting an open morning as part of celebrations to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday on Saturday, June 11 from 9am to 12pm, which will include teas, coffees and muffins and goody bags available to visitors and travellers alike.
Mayor Tim O’Kane said: “There’s so many different street parties taking place, bunting up everywhere.
“It’s so nice to see people enjoying themselves and putting on such a range of community events supporting and celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday. There is a quite a lot actually happening.
“It’s a really good way for a lot of people to get positive about the town.”
Elsewhere, Accrington St James and St Paul’s churches are honouring the Queen as part of their annual Walking Day weekend. Worshippers will enjoy refreshments and sing the national anthem at St James’ on Sunday, June 12. St John’s Church Baxenden is also hosting a Queen’s birthday party on Sunday, June 12 from 2pm to 4pm. People are asked to bring a picnic, but there will also be cream teas and cupcakes available all afternoon.
The Accrington Lions will hold an afternoon tea for the elderly to commemorate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
The free event will take place at the Brooks Club on Infant Street in Accrington from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday, June 12.

Street parties are taking place on Barnard Close in Oswaldtwistle and on Garfield Street in Accrington on Sunday, June 12, from 2pm. New mayor of Hyndburn, councillor Tim O’Kane was invited to attend the Queen’s garden party as part of her birthday celebrations.
He said the monarch’s landmark birthday was a great way to bring the best out in the community.
He added: “We want to get more people involved in these events so we can really start talking the town up.”
A Second World War reenactment enthusiast performed in front of the Queen at her 90th birthday celebrations.
Lysette Hacking, 24, formerly of Peel Park, was invited to Windsor Castle to entertain the monarch in a mock battle.
