SATURDAY, JUNE 25 Alice Jones:

Alice Jones is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and dancer. Her background is deeply rooted in the English folk tradition and the music she makes reflects this strong influence. Alice sings mostly traditional songs accompanying herself on the piano or harmonium and sometimes only with foot percussion. The sensitive and intuitive arrangements of each song allow the stories to take centre stage and her beginnings as a percussive dancer mean they are loaded with a rhythm and energy that portrays her dancer’s heartbeat. Her distinctive voice and innovative style lends a fresh, modern perspective to traditional material and brings new life to old songs. The Peel Park Hotel, Accrington. Doors open 7.30pm. Tickets £8. For tickets and general enquiries go to www. samhandpromotions. webs.com or call 07724 118575.

Name of Event:

The Falling – March To The Front.

Where / when is it?:

Thursday, June 30, 2016 (various times). Perfor- mances beginning at 7pm in Oakhill Park, Accrington.

What does it involve?:

We are looking for 50 walkers and one lead walker for each of the routes. Walkers will be carrying a backpack between them to represent the weight of the backpacks that the soldiers carried on their March to the Front the night before the Battle of the Somme. If you would like to walk or lead the walks, please contact Gayle on 01254 398319. The walks will set off from various locations in Hyndburn; Accrington, Baxenden, Church, Clayton-le-Moors, Great Harwood, Huncoat, Oswaldtwistle and Rishton. The walks will converge at Oakhill Park, Accrington, at 7pm, where there will be a combined brass band of the East Lancashire Concert Band and the East Lancashire Artillery Band. There will then be a performance of The Falling, which is a large scale dramatic representation of the first 20 minutes of the Battle of the Somme when more than half of the Accrington Pals lost their lives. The Falling is a conceptual movement piece in which 720 will represent the soldiers who went over the top on July 1, 1916. Be a part of this stunning, commemorative event on Thursday, June 30. To honour the Accrington Pals we are asking for groups of walkers and people to take part in The Falling Performance. We need people from all over Hyndburn to get involved. That’s over 1,500 we need to get involved in this massive community event. Plus, we need an audience to watch it. Please get involved and get in touch.

Any other information?:

This is a free event and a great opportunity to be a part of your community and be a part of history to represent your town in a walk and / or dramatic performance piece to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by the Accrington Pals.
