STANLEY midfielder Andy Procter has decided to retire from football in order to focus on his career as a physiotherapist.

The 33-year-old was offered a new deal by the Reds at the end of the latest campaign, but has decided against signing it.

He now plans on moving into a different club’s medical department, and he admits it was a hard decision deciding to hang up the boots.

“It’s a tough decision to leave Accrington. It’s a club hugely close to my heart and I can’t thank everyone there enough for everything they’ve done over the years,” he said.

“It’s a brilliant club full of brilliant people but I feel like the time is right to start something new.

“I’ve been doing my physio qualifications for a while now and feel it’s a natural time to move into that side of the game.

“I hope to be able to move onto another club and gain invaluable experience of the medical side of things.

“Accrington has given me the best moments of my playing career and it will always be the first result I look for.

“I’m sure the lads can have another great season under John and Jimmy.”

Procter spent 10 years with Stanley from 2002 to 2012, and also brief spells at Preston North End and Bury, he returned to the Wham Stadium for another two years from 2014 to 2016.

He played 446 times for Accrington during his time at the club, with only Paul Mullin making more appearances.

Meanwhile, Stanley have confirmed that they’ve agreed compensation with Rangers for the departures of Matt Crooks and Josh Windass.

The pair had initially been unable to train with the Scottish side while negotiations were taking place, but a figure has now been agreed and they are allowed to train.
