Thinking big about bathrooms
FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2016 BATHROOMS may be one of the smallest rooms in the home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dream big when it comes to getting the most of this confined – yet much used – area.
Jamie Bell, managing director of Illuminated Mirrors, has five top tips for creating a bigger bathroom:
Integrated lighting - Bulky overhead lighting can make a ceiling feel lower and create the feeling of a smaller bathroom. By choosing a mirror with integrated lighting there is no need for a light fixture at all.
Go big or go home – Mirrors are a fantastic tool when it comes to creating the illusion of a bigger bathroom. And the trick is to go big. Mirrors that take up a large portion of the wall create the illusion of more space, especially if you keep the tone of your bathroom relatively simple. The larger the mirror, the bigger the reflection and therefore the greater the illusion.
Product placement - Where you place a mirror is vital to the overall effect. The ideal spot would be the wall opposite a window. Not only will this flood the room with natural light during the day but visually it will also create the illusion of two windows.
Keep it simple - Confined spaces look bigger when you use the same colour throughout. Keeping the colour scheme simple means less contrast and ensures the room isn’t broken up into small segments. Go for the same colour across all walls and the ceiling. Large tiles and therefore fewer grouting lines will also add to the feeling of more space. Fixture list - There are certain fixtures all bathrooms need: a toilet toilet, a tub and a sink are the bare essentials. But one size no longer fits all. Corner sinks, smaller baths and back-to-wall toilets will give back some much needed floor space.
