PUPILS from schools across Hyndburn have secured their places at the largest youth sporting event in the county, the SPAR Lancashire School Games.

Pupils from The Hollins Technology College were victorious in an athletics event, while the boys from Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School took first place in a handball event.

Elsewhere, there was double glory for pupils from Accrington Academy who claimed victory in both girls’ rounders and inclusive football.

The students will now go on to represent Hyndburn at the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals, where they will compete against teams from 14 other Lancashire districts in a bid to be named county champions in boys’ handball, super 8 athletics, girls’ rounders and inclusive football.

Jane Johnson, who is the school games organiser for Hyndburn and arranged the events, said: “As the county finals draw near, it’s wonderful to see such fantastic sporting displays and, as a result, we are building up a really strong team to represent Hyndburn in Blackpool next month.”

Now in its tenth year, the SPAR Lancashire School Games comprises two main events designed to give all children the opportunity to participate in competitive sport.

Schools across Lancashire are now battling it out for a place at the games’ county finals, to compete against pupils from 15 county districts to be crowned champions in sports including rounders, tennis, orienteering, netball, athletics and gymnastics.

More than 2,400 youngsters are expected to take part in the event at Stanley Park in Blackpool on Tuesday, July 5, a result of the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, which inspired thousands of children to participate in competitive sport.
