FOUR Hyndburn council staff have been honoured for their commitment after clocking up an astonishing 173 years’ service between them.

Administration services manager Derek Rydeheard; senior member services officer Monica Bell, parks multi task foreman Gordon Mason and crematorium technician Mick Hogg, all joined the council back in the 1970s and have each completed at least 40 years’ service.

They attended a presentation at the Haworth Art Gallery where council leader Miles Parkinson, presented them with certificates.

The council’s longest serving member of staff, after 46 years is Derek Rydeheard.

Derek said: “I work with a great team of people, we really are like a family here and have gone through all life’s ups and downs together.”

Monica Bell is the longest serving woman on the council, with 44 years’ service. She said: “I’ve seen many changes over my years at Hyndburn, but in all that time, I’ve never regretted ‘staying put’.

“I have worked - and work - with many marvellous officers and councillors. Hyndburn is a strong ship, with a strong crew.”

Gordon Mason has been with the local authority for almost 44 years.

Gordon said: “It doesn’t seem almost 44 years ago since I started work in Mercer Park and took myself off to Myerscough College each week as an apprentice.

“I’m proud to be part of a team keeping our parks and open spaces looking great and of the camaraderie we have too. You never know I could be the one to do 50 years here!”

Mick Hogg has just completed four decades of service in April this year.

He added: “Hyndburn is a great place to work, I’ve brought my family up during my time here and have always worked with a great bunch of people.

“I’m proud of what we do, the important service we provide, and how the team keeps the cemetery grounds in fantastic condition. People are always commenting on it.”

The fab four were thanked at a ceremony at the art gallery.

Speaking at the presentation, Hyndburn council leader Miles Parkinson said: “So here we are - from the 70s to 2016.

“We feel so lucky that the council has such a wealth of experience and talent in its ranks and we want to thank you for all your hard work during your many years’ service.”
