Luncheon club closes after 40 years

-

A POPULAR luncheon club in Great Harwood has closed down after nearly 40 years.

The weekly group has been run at Bank Mill House on Church Street since the building opened and provided meals to single residents.

However the club has now folded after longrunning volunteer Sheila Hogan and colleagues Jackie Goodall, Claire Ashworth and Joan Bartlett stepped down from their roles.

Sheila, who lives in Great Harwood and has been involved with the club for more than 20 years, said: “I’m 74 and getting too old. My daughter was getting mad at me to finish a long time ago but you get so involved. I just couldn’t go on any longer.

“We all had a meeting and decided to close the club. We didn’t take the decision lightly but we couldn’t carry it on any longer. It was just getting too much.

“We used to have to cook for 36 men and women.

“They were all single people. The lady who started the club off decided that, because she said couples were quite capable of making something for themselves so we would just have it for single people.

“They had a dinner, pudding and cup of tea for £3 which is nothing really. Everything was freshly cooked.

“Everybody was so sad and so were we. We got a lot of chocolates, flowers and cards with a lot of nice things written in them.”
