Volunteer branched out to give something back
Name: Jak Spedding.
Which organisation are you involved with?: Hyndburn Tree Wardens.
What does the organisa
tion do?: We are a group of volunteers which formed in 2010 to gather information about local trees, get involved in local tree matters and encourage local practical projects related to trees and woods.
How did you become a
volunteer?: I’ve done various volunteer projects with Woody, a community woodland management social enterprise in the past and a number of members are involved with both groups, so I was invited to a meeting, which we hold at the Peel Park pub every second Wednesday of the month.
Which projects have you been involved with
recently?: We have ran a number of community involvement days including planting over 500 trees at Wood Nook Vale earlier in the year and running a rustic furniture making course at Oakhill Park.
What do you enjoy most
about doing this?: Giving a little bit back to the various sites which I use I use on a regular basis for recreational pursuits. What is your favourite place in Accrington?: I think anyone that is involved with what we do has a natural affinity with The Coppice.
Ideally how would you spend every day?: Growing veg.
What one piece of advice
would you give?: Enjoy life while you can. When you look back on your life, you’re not going to remember those extra hours spent in work but you will remember the extra hours spent with loved ones.
What was your first job?: Paper boy. What is on your CD / MP3 player?: Jesse Royal - World Cry. What are you reading at the moment?: Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time.
