POEM HARKS TO GOOD OLD DAYS
IRENE L Bednaisk, from Accrington, wrote us this poem about the town centre: Accy - Ram Jam-Packed Sixpence, on the buses Three mile ride to Accy Saturday, was market days
Oh, of course Tuesdays and Fridays
1960’s pop shop, Mary’s music store
The cinema where Arndales is
It was better back then you know
Then there was the market stalls
Broadway ram jam packed
I hate to say I don’t like it now
Can we have old Accy back
Bus station was on Melbourne Street Co-op store always busy Old days where dancing days
Rock and Club sent you dizzy
I grew up in the 60s, where mini skirts were fashion
Teddy boys in blue suede shoes
Elvis doing the singing
Accy was full of life, streets were never empty
Broadway stalls reached top to bottom
Shopping centre always full, now seems to be forgotten
Outdoor market reached both sides
Now there’s nothing there
Indoor market ram jam packed
They sold good biscuits there
The only tea stall from years gone by
Is the one that’s near the benches
You know the empty space near the stairs
Where people sit with memories
I know it’s good to move on, go trendy with the times
But I prefer the 60s when Accy was a thriving town.
