THEY SHOULD FIGHT CLOSURE

-

I think the Accrington Observer has been doing an excellent job pointing out three libraries-including Oswaldtwistle library - which could be saved by as little as £40,000 a year and how important these libraries are.

These libraries have had 400,000 visits over three years. It is disappointing the County Council does not seem to engage with local community groups.

Lancashire County Council, because of the vicious cuts by this Tory government, are having to make these closures. All the councils, particularly in the north should be making it known to the media that these closures are detrimental to our society. They should be fighting these closures, not accepting them. The money that is available to Hyndburn Council is barely enough to convince essential services like road repairs and refuse collection. This is a scandal.

Closing libraries is a backward step and undermining our free and open society built up over many generations. This Government has money to spend on hairbrain schemes for new and dangerous nuclear power stations and nuclear bombs but not for libraries.

The complicated documents Lancashire County Council is handing out is not going to get much support. A simple petition would have got thousands of signatures against any library closing plus all the other important needs of our community. Joy Beswick Merlin Court Oswaldtwistle
