Gates fitted to tackle motorbike nuisance in Coppice parkland

-

TWO specialist gates have been installed in Huncoat to guard against motorbike nuisance.

Illegal riding of motorcycles and scrambler bikes through the Coppice park has been a major source of anti-social behaviour in Huncoat, as well as causing problems for the local environment and wildlife.

A number of solutions have been discussed with councillors and residents, including a ‘ranger’ scheme to deter riders which was rejected as ‘unviable’ due to cost and safety concerns.

However, two new combination gates have now been fitted at the car park to the Coppice, which are hoped to deter riding in the area.

This follows a trial by Hyndburn council which saw a similar gate installed at the top of Bullough Park.

The gates, costing £900 each, were joint funded by Hyndburn council and the Hyndburn Prospects Foundation as motorbike nuisance was deemed detrimental to the ‘tranquillity and enjoyment’ of the natural spaces.

Huncoat councillor Eamonn Higgins said: “We have had a lot of offenders riding motorcycles up at the Coppice. Not is this only illegal, it is a danger to dog walkers and animals and also causes noise pollution.

“The gates allow horse riders up to use the bridal paths but no other vehicles should be present on the Coppice.”

The design of the gates was consulted with and approved by the British Horse Society Regional Bridleway Officer for the North West.

With a side gate for most walkers to go straight through, one section of the main gate opens to allow for pushchairs, disability access, cyclists and horse riders.

The whole width can be opened to allow for occasional maintenance vehicle access.

It is hoped that the introduction of the gates will dramatically reduce the amount of motorbike riding in the park.

Coun Higgins added: “Motorbike nuisance is a priority in Huncoat for our community police and patrols have been stepped up in identified areas.

“Anyone who wishes to report a nuisance motorcycle user should call police on 101.”
