MR Robert Ainsworth, of the Croft Nursing Home in Whalley, died in hospital on Sunday, October 16, aged 91.

Born on July 1, 1925 in Henry Street, Church to mother Mary and father Bill, he apprentice­d as a sheet metal worker at Howard and Bulloughs, starting in May 1940 when he was 14 and completed his apprentice­ship in May 1947.

He enlisted in the army in November 1944 aged 18 and served with the Royal Engineers in the Middle East, Egypt and Palestine until March 1948.

He entered the army reserve after the Second World War and was given the war medal.

He worked at Howard and Bulloughs and Lucas Aerospace at Hargher Clough in Burnley.

Robert lived in the Accrington area for most of his life in Fern Gore, Spring Hill and Church. He also spent time in Hamilton North Island in New Zealand from 1966 to 1969.

His hobbies included photograph­y, painting, fishing, crown green bowling, gardening and being in his allotment when he retired.

Husband of the late Mary, he leaves his sons Michael and Stephen, daughters-in-law Gail and Gail, granddaugh­ters Melanie, Marie, Christine and Alison and greatgrand­children Luca, Sophia and Audrey.

He also leaves his brother Tom in Canada and sister Nell in Florida.

His funeral will be held at 11am on Wednesday, October 26 at Accrington crematoriu­m officiated by Mr John Milton.
