MRS Edna Purvin – beloved wife of Charles John Purvin for almost 66 years – passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side, on the morning of Friday, November 4.

Edna was a devoted mother of Hilary, Jean and Andrew, a kind motherin-law to Ian, Richard and Elizabeth, a much-loved sister of Connie, the late Harry and Elsie and the most wonderful grandma and great-grandma.

Edna lived in Claytonle-Moors all her life, attending All Saints School and marrying John at All Saints Church on December 16, 1950.

Over the years she played an active part in the Church life, teaching at Sunday School, enjoying being a member of the Mothers’ Union and regularly cleaning the church brasses and flower arranging.

As a young woman Edna worked as a weaver and at Clayton Laundry. As her family grew she worked at English Electric and Wellfield HFE until her retirement.

As a family over the years, holidays camping and caravannin­g in Cornwall and Scotland (with St Ives being a special place) were enjoyed by all. As the years passed Edna found great pleasure in visiting her children, grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren all over the British Isles.

Edna’s funeral service will take place at All Saints Church, Clayton-le-Moors on Friday, November 18 at 12noon followed by interment at Dill Hall Cemetery at 1pm conducted by Rev Toby Webber.

MR Harry P Sidebottom, of Edgar Street, Huncoat, died on Tuesday, November 1, aged 68.

He used to work at Associated Dairies in Accrington until it closed. Ill-health prevented Harry working, although he did help out looking after rescue cats up until just before he died.

Harry loved his rescue cats, and talked to them like they were his children. He also loved karaoke and won quite a few competitio­ns for his singing.

Son of the late Norah and Harry, Harry was brother of Anne and the late Catherine, David and Bernard, brother-in-law of Scotty and Marjorie, and a very dear uncle to Ian and Nathan.

His funeral service was due to be held at 2.20pm on Thursday, November 10, at Accrington Crematoriu­m, followed by cremation.

Flowers are welcomed.

Funeral director: Hyndburn Funeral Services, Queens Road, Accrington. MR Jack Reid, of Springhill Care Home, late of Huncoat, passed away on Sunday, November 6, aged 79.

He was a despatch clerk and had worked at Hambledon Mill until it closed in 1977 and subsequent­ly worked at Express Gifts, from where he retired.

Jack was proud to have been born in Huncoat. He was interested in anything to do with Huncoat. He had been an active member of the Labour Party. He enjoyed travelling and had visited Australia, Germany (Munich beer festival) and Jersey.

He never married, and was the brother of the late Fred, Frank, Allen and Marion Fish (nee Reid) and was brother-in-law to Mary, Lily and Doug and the late Nellie Reid.

He was uncle to Margaret, Sheila and Marion; Derek, Gordon and Brian, Jacqueline and Kathleen, Catherine and Janine and their spouses, and great-uncle to many great-nephews and nieces. He was a friend to many people and well-known in Huncoat.

His funeral service will be held at 11.40am on Friday, November 18, at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

Family flowers only please, however donations, if desired, suggested for The Blind, c/o funeral director MRS Vida Filippini, of Alleytroyd­s, Church, Accrington, passed away on Thursday, November 3, aged 90.

Vida had a number of jobs including being a cotton weaver, a shop assistant and working at the Regal (Odeon) Cinema. She was also a housewife.

Vida enjoyed knitting, reading and solving puzzles. She loved holidays in the caravan.

Wife of late husband Jan, and mother of children, the late Jan and Miesje, Vida leaves her grandchild­ren Emma and Matthew, and also her five great-grandchild­ren.

Her funeral service will be held at 10.15am on Friday, November 11, with a Requiem Mass at St Anne’s RC Church, administer­ed by Fr Stamp, followed by cremation at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 11.40am.

MRS Barbara Bassett nee Dickinson, of Banbury Avenue, Oswaldtwis­tle, passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, November 3, aged 68.

Upon leaving school she started work at Libbertons Printers in Church where she stayed until starting her family. She returned to work on an evenings at Arnolds until returning to Libbertons and finally Ward Knowles from where she retired.

Barbara took up running in her thirties, enjoying many hours running with friends Kathleen and Pauline right up until May this year, when her health started to fail.

She also enjoyed a good social life with her husband and friends Christine and Alan, Kathleen and Michael, and Steve and Janet.

Dearly-loved wife of David, she was proud mother of Andrea and Steven, dear mother-inlaw of Catherine and Joe, loving grandma to Abbie, Mia, Millie and Evie, beloved sister of Margaret and late brother-in-law Tony. Barbara will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Her funeral service will be held at 2.15pm on Friday, November 11, at St Mary Magdelen’s Church, Devonshire Street, Accrington, administer­ed by Fr Lawrence, followed by cremation at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 3pm.

Family flowers only please, however donations, if desired, requested for George Barton Trust c/o funeral director Hyndburn Funeral Services, Queens Road, Accrington. MR James Shaw, of Accrington and formerly of Oswaldtwis­tle, died suddenly at his home on Thursday, November 3, aged 81.

He was the dearly loved and devoted dad of Joan, Susan and Alec, dear father-in-law of Martin, Amanda, and the late Peter, cherished grandad of Christophe­r, Charlotte, Kerry-Rose, Alfie, Orla and great-grandad of Harlow. He was also a dear brother-in-law and uncle.

Jim was brought up at Sough Lane Farm, Guide, where he helped with the family poultry business.

In later years he became a well known and well respected local shop owner having formerly been the owner of Shaws Newsagents on Union Road in Oswaldtwis­tle.

He was also a groundsman at Accrington Stanley Football Club from 1986 until his retirement aged 67.

He loved his work and his sports and was a keen supporter of Blackburn Rovers Football club where he enjoyed going to watch the matches.

He was also a keen DIY enthusiast and could turn his hand to any DIY job and was always on hand to help out the family. He was a private man who liked to keep himself to himself but would always put others first.

Jim’s funeral service will take place at Accrington Crematoriu­m, Burnley Road, Accrington on MR Albert William Pendlebury Blackburn of Huncoat died on Monday, October 31 at Royal Blackburn Hospital, aged 92.

He was a self-employed motor mechanic who ran his own business, employing up to three mechanics.

Mr Blackburn was interested in gardening music, tractors and the countrysid­e. He kept hens and horses and loved to tinker with and mend things.

His late wife Marjorie died in 2012.

Mr Blackburn leaves his sister-in-law Mary Evans, nieces Susan Evans, Jan Williams and Viv Stevenson, nephews Philip Evans and Jeff Stevenson, Jan’s husband Paul and son Alex and Jeff’s wife Sheila.

His funeral followed by cremation will take pace on Tuesday, November 15 at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 1.40pm, led by Mr John Milton. Family flowers only.

Donations are requested for the British Hen Welfare Trust and the Donkey Sanctuary.
