their other games.

“I am relieved but it just shows how football goes. That’s probably the worst we have played in our last seven or eight games and yet we win,” he said.

“Crewe got a few chances and if they would have taken them then it’s a different game, but we’ve taken one and got the win.

“We can still play better than that. It was a scrappy game but we put a lot into it and you can’t fault our players for their commitment and effort.

“I don’t think there’s any substitute for hard work. You can bemoan your luck all you want but you can go one of two ways.

“You can stick your chest out and fight and work out or you hide and you sulk.

“The latter is never going to be in my character and I don’t want players with that in their character.”

Crewe were the better team in the early stages of the match and they went close when Chris Dagnall got on the end of a cross from Oliver Turton, but he wasted the chance when he should have done better. The Reds had opportunities of their own as the half progressed, with Shay McCartan and Mark Hughes both going close for the visitors.

Accrington appeared to be a threat from setpieces, and they again threatened when Kee had two good header attempts.

Stanley still had to be alert at the other end, as Crewe captain Harry Davis fired wide before Alex Kiwomya had a move thwarted by Matty Pearson.

Coleman’s men managed to make the breakthrough just before the interval when Kee scored on 43 minutes.

A corner into the box from McConville was met by the striker, who headed home to score his eighth goal of the campaign.

It was a quieter affair in the second half, with defences holding firm and chances much more limited for both teams.

Crewe did have a good opportunity to level things up when George Cooper raced through on goal, but he was denied by a good save from Aaron Chapman.

John O’Sullivan headed wide as Stanley looked to double their lead, before Chapman was called upon again at the other end to keep out Callum Ainley.

Despite late pressure from Crewe, Accrington were able to hold to earn a much-needed win.
