Why do we prefer top sides?

STANLEY defender Mark Hughes admits he is unsure why his side have been performing better against the top sides compared to those near the bottom.

Stanley put in another good performance on Saturday to earn a 2-2 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium against top-of-the-table Doncaster Rovers.

This season has also seen the Reds suffer a lot of defeats against some of the lower ranked teams in the division though, and Hughes doesn’t understand why.

“We’d all love to be able to put a finger on why we seem to do better against the top sides,” he told the club’s official website.

“It’s been a funny season in that respect. Against the top seven or eight we’ve done pretty well and it seems like it’s been the lower clubs that we’ve slipped up against.”

It is set to be a busy few weeks for Accrington as they have a couple of games in hand on the teams around them in the table.

With that in mind, Hughes is adamant the team can’t dwell on past results and most be fully focused on the future.

“We’ve got enough games behind us, we’ve got a good level of fitness so it’s about building,” he said.

“The games come thick and fast at this time of year, there’s no time to look at the past. I think if you ask any footballer they all like Saturday-Tuesday schedules because the training takes care of itself and we all like that.”

Accrington went ahead after Shay McCartan’s opener, but were pegged back when Tommy Rowe levelled things up on 20 minutes.

Doncaster then took the lead just before the hour mark through John Marquis, but Edwards came up trumps in the closing stages to earn Stanley a point.
