Coleman livid as players switch off

JOHN Coleman revealed he was furious with his Accrington Stanley side after they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Wycombe on Tuesday.

The Reds were leading in the match through Sean Clare, but a lapse of concentration let Wycombe turn things around before Stanley then equalised just after the hour mark thanks to Matty Pearson.

While the point saw Accrington extend their unbeaten run to four games, Coleman was extremely frustrated with his side for failing to win.

“I’m furious that we went to sleep for two throw-ins in a minute as we should know our jobs and should deal with it better,” he told the club’s official website.

“They never laid a glove on us in the first half but then we allowed them to be effective and score. The second goal is pathetic too as the ball should never make it into the box. We’ve got experienced players there who switched off and have gone to sleep. For it to happen once for the first goal is possibly unlucky, but for it to happen twice is careless.

“We battered them for 45 minutes but then never came out for the second half like I wanted us to start.

“Matty got us back in the game with a great header and from there I thought we would go on and win it, but we weren’t bright enough.”

Stanley struggled to deal with the long balls that Wycombe were firing forward in the second half, and Coleman doesn’t enjoy that style of play.

“I wouldn’t for one second try and criticise the way they play as it’s effective for them, but I personally couldn’t play that way,” he said.

“They were just playing for free kicks and throw ins to play a yardage game and get balls into the box, but we allowed them to do that as in the second half we invited them onto us too much.

“They’ve done well all season though and they’re above us in the table, and I can understand why they think they’ve done enough to get a point.”
