Young soccer stars were on ball for success
TALENTED young footballers are shown in this week’s top picture.
They were snapped by former Observer photographer Garth Dawson in the 1960s.
It features John Beswick, 17, Brian Kirkham, 16, Malcolm Baldwin, 17, and Stephen Proctor, 16, who were all members of one of the youngest teams in the Accrington Combination league, Antley Methodists.
Our next picture shows a packed audience at the Unsectarian Mission in Cotton Street, Accrington, in 1967.
They were there for a visit by the Pilgrim Singers from Little Lever, who sang gospel songs.
Our third photograph was taken in the early 1990s and shows Councillor Len Dickinson pouring a welcome cuppa for Hyndburn’s Mayoress Pat Quinn and members of her charity committee. They had raised £154 during a coffee morning at the Alma Inn, Baxenden, and the total was boosted further with a £100 donation from Albert Wyer, landlord of the New Brewery in Accrington, and £150 from the Lynwood Arms in Clayton-le-Moors.
Our final picture this week shows bellringers at St James Church Kirk celebrating the reopening of the belfry after it was destroyed by a fire 10 years earlier.
