Campfire crew were singing through rain

-

BAD weather forced an Oswaldtwistle charity camp fire indoors - but it didn’t put a dampener on the occasion for the 400 people who turned up.

The picture above was taken by former Observer photographer Garth Daw- son in the 1960s.

It shows Guides and Brownies sat around an imitation log fire singing campfire songs.

Our next picture (below) was also taken in the 1960s and shows Valerie Smith, 24, who was believed to be Accrington’s only woman taxi driver when she got behind the wheel of one of Taylor’s Taxi Service cabs.

She helped out the firm during busy periods, driving guests and, occasionally, the bride as well to w weddings.

Coronation Street star V Vera Duckworth opened th the Leisuretime Amusements arcade on Broadway, Accrington, in our th third picture from January 1 1992. Actress Liz Dawn, who played the nagging wife on the TV soap, had rejected earlier calls from a councillor, who wanted children banned from all amusement arcades, to stay away from the cerem mony.

Our final photograph th this week was also taken in 1992 and shows eightyear-old John Aspinall fromr Accrington, who had a rare form of epilepsy, during a VIP trip to Blackburn Rovers football ground.
