THE ROTARY CLUB OF CHURCH AND OSWALDTWISTLE

-

LOCAL scouts group sign up for the big walk.

There will be a grand turnout of 15 scouts from the 1st Oswaldtwistle (St Paul’s) scout group who will be signing up for the Hyndburn charity walk organised by the Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle, which takes place on Sunday, May 14.

The scouts, aged 10 years to 14 years, will be entering the 10K walk which starts at the Business Centre at Junction 7 across from the Dunkenhalgh Hotel at Clayton-le-Moors.

This will be the 12th consecutive walk that the Rotary Club has held and this hugely popular walk has raised more than £500,000 for various charities and good causes.

The 10k walk is very scenic with half the distance being along the Leeds-Liverpool canal, then along the old railway track through to Great Harwood.

The 1st Oswaldtwistle (St Paul’s) scout group is a go ahead organisation which offers a wide variety of activities, including canoeing, scuba diving, cooking skills, map reading, fire lighting and first aid.

Their scout leader Mick Shackleton said: “I am proud of all the scouts that are taking part in this charity walk as they intend to raise money, of which half will go to the Anaphylaxis Campaign and the other half will go to club funds in the quest for gaining the Scouts Gold Award through the numerous badges that scouts need to achieve.

“The Anaphylaxis Campaign was brought to the forefront with the untimely death of Megan Lee, a student from St Christopher’s school (sadly the young daughter of Rotarian Franco Sanna also died of the same disease some years ago) ”

The 1st Oswaldtwistle (St Paul’s) scout group was one of the original scout groups to be formed by the then Rev Calterns of St Paul’s Church on Catlow Hall Street.

The first scoutmaster in 1911 was H Catlow.

The group have the honour of displaying a necker of royal blue to denote it is one of the oldest groups formed.

Rotarian Ron Pickup, walk organiser, said: “I am delighted that the scouts are turning out in big numbers on the day and hope they both enjoy the experience and are successful in raising funds for the Anaphylaxis Campaign and for scouts to achieve their scouts Gold Award.”

To register online go to rotarywalk.org.uk or telephone Stuart Duhan on 01254 433501 or email Stuart: stuart duhan@ hotmail, co.uk.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Anaphylaxis Campaign should contact scout leader Mick Shackleton on 07846805830.

Another honour for local Rotary club

The Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle has been awarded the best website for 2016. This prestige event is keenly contested by 68 Rotary clubs from the north west and Cumbria. It is indeed an honour to come first in the competition and follows the award of being top PR club for the previous year.

President of the club Jim Hargreaves, at a recent club meeting, made the presentation of the best website shield to web mistress and friend of Rotary Pat Herbert and web consultant and club Rotarian Richard Wallwork.

Richard originally set up the club website a few years ago and attained a very high standard before passing it to Pat Herbert, who in the last 12 months has worked very hard to achieve the standard which the judging committee, after assessing all the other club websites, decided the winner was the Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle.

Judges were looking to see if the home page was interesting, was it updated regularly, did it contain future meetings and future events and was it linked to District, Rotary International and Rotary in England and Ireland sites.

Also does the website contain reports and press releases of recent events, with good use of pictures.

Here the club photographer Franco Sanna should be congratulated for his input.

In addition are the club officers displayed with pictures and also are the activities of club committees updated regularly.

Jim Hargreaves said: “Our club is very honoured to be awarded best website for 2016. I would like to pay tribute to Richard and Pat who have set such a high standard and to Franco who besides his role of chief photographer runs the club’s Facebook page.

“We consider our website is vital to showing what our club is about and to reach out to the community to highlight what we are achieving.

“Pat Herbert has taken on the role of web mistress in a most impressive manner and should be highly congratulated.”
