RISHTON AND GREAT HARWOOD SOROPTIMISTS

-

RISHTON and Great Harwood Soroptimists brought their 2016/2017 year to a close by hosting their annual Friendship Evening at Bank Mill House in Great Harwood.

Club members, Soroptimist members from other clubs and friends enjoyed an ‘Evening of Origami’ with Stephen Watson.

Stephen began his talk by explaining that origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding.

It is the tradition of making animals, flowers and decorative objects from paper without the help of glue, staples or scissors and although it began many years ago it is still being used today in education and therapy.

Being fully qualified in this art, Stephen regularly visits various groups and organisations to give talks and demonstrations.

To show some of the wonderful things that can be created by origami, Stephen brought along a display of his awardwinning achievements.

The audience was astonished at the skill and creativity involved in his display.

But it did lead to some concerned faces in the room as we wondered what exactly we were going to have to make once the workshop began.

We didn’t really need to worry as he was very kind to us and announced that we would be making a small box.

Stephen provided all the materials and took us through the procedure step by step, giving very clear and often humorous instructions.

To everyone’s surprise we all ended up with a very impressive box, but could we do it again, on our own?

Supper was provided by the Rishton and Great Harwood Club and a raffle was held to raise money for the club charities, Nightsafe and Blood Bikes.

A vote of thanks was given to Stephen and the club by the guest of honour, Soroptimist regional treasurer Angie Christopher.
