Defendant had ‘mood swings’ and was ‘sorry’
DEFENCE barrister Alexander Rostron said Svajcsik was ‘regretful and remorseful’.
The court was told that Svajcsik was a ‘heavy’ cannabis user at the time and suffered from depression and mood swings which ‘at the time were quite severe’.
Mr Rostron told the court: “He is regretful and remorseful about what he has done. He’s very sorry for what happened.
“He’s a man who has been out of trouble for a number of years. What he has done was momentary, it was in the agony of the moment.”
Sentencing, Judge Jonathan Gibson said: “You were shouting at each other and it became quite heated. Fortunately the injury itself looks as though it would heal within a few weeks at most, but of course psychological injuries for offences of this kind take a lot longer to heal.
“You have never been immediately to prison before and it seems to me the threat of immediate imprisonment is likely to be a very significant motivating factor for you. There’s also a great deal of work the probation service feel they can do with you in areas such as taking cannabis, relationships, thinking and victim awareness.” A THEATRE company will begin fundraising for its 125th anniversary with a concert in Accrington Town Hall.
Accrington Theatre Group, a volunteer-run arts company, is gearing up to celebrate the landmark date in 2018, and is planning several events this year to make sure it goes with a bang.
The group has been performing musical theatre in the borough since 1893, giving it a claim as one of the oldest surviving theatre companies in the country.
It has performed in Oswaldtwistle for decades at the Civic Theatre, but will temporarily move to a new venue at Accrington Town Hall Ballroom next month.
Speaking about the new venue, group chairman Howard Raw said that Oswaldtwistle will be the company’s ‘spiritual home’ but the newlyrefurbished Ballroom will suit their upcoming production ‘Broadway at the Ballroom’.
He said: “Oswaldtwistle is our spiritual home. We’ve enjoyed producing shows there for many years and the management team there have been a big support.
“We’re going to be catering for this concert and the Ballroom has some spectacular facilities that will suit this production, not least a brand new lighting system, a great stage and of course the magnificent ballroom itself.” The group will make the move to the Ballroom for the concert, which takes place on May 6-7. Tickets for ‘Broadway at the Ballroom’ can be booked online at www.ticketsource.com or by calling the box office on 01254 380293.
