TALENTED Accrington schoolboys tested themselves at a football tournament in Spain.

Thirty-nine pupils from Mount Carmel High School travelled to Lloretde-Mar in Costa Brava to compete in the contest against Barcelona-based teams.

Scott Low, PE teacher and trip organiser, said the teams all competed very well on foreign soil.

He said: “Mount Carmel did themselves proud against the Spanish opposition on their home turf.

“The teams played six matches over two days winning one, holding two draws and losing three. These were excellent results.

“I am so proud of the boys who, despite playing some intense end to end games, kept their heads up and with some sublime skill scored some tremendous goals.”

Awards were presented to all the year group teams for their achievements.

Matthew Ormerod, Harrison Dewar, Lenni Cirino, Darren Hitchen, and Lenni Cirino won the ‘golden boot’ awards, while Hamza Sarwar, Luke Gardener and Shoib Mohammed received the ‘most improved’ awards.

Chris Cottam, year eight teacher, said: “The lads have grown in confidence and have turned from boys to men during this visit.

“I wish I could give each player in the team an award due to their tremendous attitude.”

English teacher and year 10 team manager Declan Neill said: “The attitude of the team was nothing short of remarkable.”

The four-day trip also included a visit to Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, mini golf, ten-pin bowling and time on the beach.
