KINDHEARTED students put their business skills to the test to raise money for cancer sufferer Charlie Procter.
Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School year seven pupils spent a week planning and preparing stalls for a fair where other youngsters and staff could buy cakes and play games.
The most popular stall by far was the one where students could pay for the opportunity to ‘pie’ two brave teachers. Two students, Hamerah Maskeen and Sabah Zaman, both donated over £200 each of their own money for the cause.
Headteacher Paul Trickett said: “We have a long tradition of raising a lot of money for charitable organisations, and as always, our students have worked hard and dug deep to help Charlie and his family. Charlie’s story has touched everyone and we hope this money will go some way towards getting him better.”
The event, held before the Easter holidays, raised £1,000 and will be used to help Charlie receive treatment in America.
Charlie, four, suffers with hepatoblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of liver cancer and his family are trying to raise £315,000.
Vital operation for Charlie confirmed – see page 19. PUPILS were challenged to design something new and useful from an old piece of gardening equipment as part of a national upcycling competition.
Norden High School students in Rishton took part in the contest during Waste Week and British Science Week.
The inter-school winner was year eight pupil Holly Mellor with her water feature design.
Mrs Davy, key stage three science co-ordinator and one of the judges, said: “We have had over 100 students enter, with some very imaginative ideas like the hoe fan, and the upcycling of garden buckets also seemed to be a popular theme.
“Unfortunately none of the design ideas made it the finals of the national competition.”
The contest was organised by The Pod, a international programme educating young people about sustainable lifestyle and energy choices.
Science teacher Mrs Moorhouse said: “Waste Week is one of The Pod’s annual campaigns aimed to inspire and help students understand energy, science and sustainability, which is facilitated through our Green Team.”
