Teenager left fighting for life after horror smash

ATEENAGE driver is in hospital with critical injuries after crashing into a parked car. The 18-yearold, who was driving a red Nissan Micra, suffered a fractured pelvis in the smash and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital.

Police said his 16-year-old passenger suffered ‘very slight’ injuries in the crash on Fielding Lane in Oswaldtwis­tle at 5pm on Monday.

Firefighte­rs used cutting equipment to cut off the roof and doors to allow para- medics to get the 18-year-old on a spine board.

“A nearby resident on the road, who did not want to be named, told the Observer: “It’s a dangerous road, I’ve lived here for 28 years and there have been lots of crashes. “It is a big problem. “The driver was badly injured but the passenger is alright.”

The 18-year-old from Accrington was left in a ‘critical but stable’ condition after the Nissan Micra he was driving collided with a Renault Megane on Fielding Lane, Oswaldtwis­tle on Monday, May 15.

Lancashire Police said the Micra was travelling towards Union Road at the time of the incident at around 5pm, but is believed to have left the carriagewa­y to the nearside before colliding with the Megane, which was parked and unattended.

Officers are now appealing for informatio­n following the incident.

The teenage driver suffered a fractured pelvis and chest injuries in the crash and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition. Police said his passenger, a 16-year-old man, also suffered some ‘very slight’ injuries.

Sergeant Adam Daw- son, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “We would like to piece together exactly what occurred, and how it came about.

“We would now like to hear from anybody who saw the incident or saw the vehicles in the moments before the collision.”

A nearby resident on Fielding Lane, who asked not to be named, said: “I had only just got home when I saw what had happened.

“The police officer told me a car had come down the road and lost control and hit a parked car.

“It is a dangerous road, I’ve lived here 28 years and there have been lots of crashes.

“It’s a big problem. The driver was badly injured but the passenger is alright.”

Fire crews had to cut the roof and doors off the Nissan Micra to free the driver after he became trapped following the crash with the parked car.

Two crews from Hyndburn Fire Station also assisted paramedics and police to rescue the teenagers.

Firefighte­rs used Holmatro cutting equipment to cut off the roof and doors to allow the paramedics space to get the driver on to a spine board.

He was then taken to hospital by a North West Air Ambulance, which took off from Rhyddings Park.
