EN V I R O N M E NTALLY conscious children and Rotarians have taken part in a series of litter picks across Hyndburn.

More than 50 bags of rubbish were collected over two days in areas of Accrington, Great Harwood, Rishton, Church and Oswaldtwistle.

Rotarians from across the borough joined forces with RotaKids pupils from St Andrew’s primary school to help clean up the area around their school.

Michael Jackson, of Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club, said: “This is an indication of what these young pupils from the school are prepared to do, over and above the other Rotary activities they are engaged in.”

Graham Charnley, from the Great Harwood and Rishton club, assisted RotaKids pupils from St Nicholas primary school in Church with a litter pick near the school and on Dill Hall Lane.

They collected 15 bags of rubbish after an ‘excellent morning’s work’.

The third Rotary club, Church and Oswaldtwistle, carried out their clean-up with help from Rotarians from Great Harwood and Rishton.

A total of 25 rubbish bags were collected and the clean-up focused on parts of the annual charity walk route and around Baron Way and Alan Ramsbottom Way in Great Harwood.

Accrington and Pendle View Rotary clubs held their litter pick in the Peel Park area of Accrington and produced 12 bags of litter.

Organisers said they hope to turn the ‘very successful’ event into an annual occasion.

Michael said: “What we wanted was achieved. RotaKids and Rotarians working together to promote a cleaner community in Hyndburn.

“Over the next 12 months more schools in Hyndburn will be chartered as more RotaKids clubs which is a very powerful platform for both Rotary and the pupils to be engaged in very worthwhile projects, such as this.”

Jim Hargreaves, Rotary president, said, “As one of the four presidents involved with this litter pick programme, I am very proud of what Hynd- burn Rotarians and especially the students from the two RotaKids schools, have undertaken.

“These young students from local primary schools have very much impressed senior members of all four Rotary clubs. I would like to thank Hyndburn council for their help in providing litter picking equipment and arranging collection of the sacks of rubbish.”
