Tiffany Glass mosaics fly to New York
YVONNE ROBINS
THE Sulphur Crested Cockatoos and some of our other mosaic samplers have now gone on their way to the Corning Museum in New York for the first museum exhibition focused exclusively on Tiffany glass mosaics.
In addition to the Haworth mosaics, the exhibition features 50 works dating from the 1890s to the 1920s, from intimately-scaled mosaic fancy goods designed for use in the home to large-scale mosaic panels and architectural elements composed of thousands of individual pieces of glass.
This is a major international event and advertises our collection worldwide.
Deputy manager and curator, Gillian Berry, had assistance from gallery volunteer, Alison Iddon, to condition-check each item going on loan before they were carefully crated and transported to London.
They were then checked into flight cargo and transported to New York where Gillian then travelled with them to the Corning Museum and condition-checked them once again, before she oversaw them being displayed.
In the meantime, we are working with Joseph Briggs expert, Doug Jackson, to bring you the story of our ‘local boy makes good’ which will be on show this summer during our ‘Amazing Accrington’ exhibition. In addition, members of Haworth Artist Network are filling the spaces left by the mosaic samplers with their interpretation of the Tiffany glass collection, so there will be lots of new images and information for our visitors to see.
The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 12 noon to 4.45pm, Saturday, Sunday 12 noon to 4.15pm, closed all day Monday, free entrance and parking.
