AWOMAN in her sixties was injured when a gun was fired at a home in Accrington. Police said that two men have been arrested after two shots hit the door of a house on Richmond Road, Accrington, at around 9.55pm on Monday.

The woman suffered injuries to her leg and arm, which are not thought to be serious.

It is the third time a house has been shot at in the borough since the start of the year, following previous incidents on Stanhill Street in Oswaldtwistle in January, and on Countess Street in Accrington in February.

Lancashire Police said they are ‘keeping an open mind’ about whether the inci- dents are linked. Mohammed Yousaf, 52, who lives on the street with his wife and four children, said: “I heard a bang and came outside and saw the broken door and glass.

“I’m very worried and so are my kids. They are scared to go to sleep.”

Two men, aged 28 and 26, from Accrington, have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and GBH.

NEIGHBOURS have spoken of their shock after a THIRD house shooting in Hyndburn this year.

Police said a woman in her 60s was hurt after a gun was fired at a house on Richmond Road, Accrington shortly before 9.55pm on Monday, June 5. Two shots were fired at the door and the victim suffered injuries to her leg and her arm, which are not thought to be serious.

It is the third house shooting in the borough so far in 2017 following previous incidents on Stanhill Street in Oswaldtwistle in January, and on Countess Street in Accrington in February.

Lancashire Police said they are ‘keeping an open mind about links to any earlier incidents’.

They believe the incident is linked to an ongoing dispute ‘ between a group of men’.

Two Accrington men, aged 26 and 28, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and GBH.

The 26-year-old, who was also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, has been released ‘under investigation’. The older man remained in custody as we went to press.

One man, who lives on Richmond Street, said: “I heard the shots but at first I thought it was a firework.

“I then saw the family come out of the house and they were in shock.

“The armed response and police came very quickly and sealed off the street.

“It’s a very quiet neigh- bourhood and things like this shouldn’t be happening. The community is in shock and whoever has done it needs to be locked up.

Mohammed Yousaf, 52, who lives on the street with his wife and four children, said: “I heard a bang and came outside and saw the broken door and glass. It was a very big noise. I’m very worried and so are my kids. They are scared to go to sleep.”

Ward councillor Munsif Dad said: “The community will see this as a very serious incident and obviously people are scared.”

DCI Joanne McHugh, from Lancashire’s Force Major Investigation Team, said has appealed for information.

She said: “If you were in the area of Richmond Road around the time of this incident and you have any information then please get in touch with us.

“I would like to stress that we suspect this is linked to an ongoing dispute between a group of men who are known to each other. We believe that there is no threat to the wider public, however we have stepped up patrols in the area to reassure local residents.” Call police on 101 quoting reference 1491 of June 5.
