ACCRINGTON FLOWER AND GARDEN CLUB

-

THE May demonstration at Accrington Flower and Garden Club was given by Judy Watker from Leeds, who was welcomed along with members and visitors by chairman Anne Kirman.

Judy chose as her title ‘Friends in Nice Places’ and recalled tales about these friends and illustrated the places where they lived in flowers and foliage.

The first connection was to Majorca and the design included pink edged cream roses, lilac stocks and lilac ceanothus all arranged on a branch with pieces of twigs with almonds on them.

A very tropical design followed with strelitzia, leucadendrons, deep orange tulips and copper splashed foliage arranged on top of an upturned copper dish bringing out the feel and colours from Madeira.

Nearer to home, Ireland was the next place with green bells of Ireland and orchids, yellow roses and laburnum blossoms.

Along with these, representing the Australian friends connection, Judy used green kangaroo paw and eucalyptus foliage, making a lovely design in the national colours.

Next, a trip down the Thames to Oxford and Christchurch College, where an exhibition about Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland followed.

An extra large cup and saucer was the container which held a posy pad on the top, into which were placed beautiful white lilies, purple aquilegia and white roses in an allround design.

For the finale we were taken to St Lucia, where two tall triangular wooden frames, representing the two mountains which rise up from the sea, were the basis of the designs.

The two arrangements contained cerise gerbera, gingers, green carnations, orchids and white and pink lilies with Kentia palms for foliage alongside eucalyptus.

The chairman thanked Judy for a wonderful evening before refreshments were served.

The next meeting, which is open to nonmembers, will be held on Tuesday, June 27, at 7.30pm in Antley Methodist Church schoolroom.
