Job seekers rise by 10pc in a year
THE number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Hyndburn has risen by ten per cent since last year, new figures have shown.
Statistics released by the Department for Work and Pensions show the number of people claiming jobseekers allowance in Hyndburn has increased by 120 from last year - to a total of 1,370 people.
However, the number is down a quarter from seven years ago and the department says there has been a total decrease of all claimants of 28 per cent in the last five years.
The number of unem- ployed people aged 18-24 claiming jobseekers allowance in the borough is also down three per cent from last year, to 340, a 41 per cent reduction since 2010.
Employer and Partnership Manager Cathy Ross said several people have recently been helped into newly-created roles. She said: “Accrington Jobcentre have supported the opening of a new The Original Factory Shop store in Accrington resulting in eight of our custom- ers moving into employment.
“Accrington and Rawtenstall Jobcentres are currently working with Blue Sky Legal based in Rising Bridge who are running a sector-based work academy for ten vacancies – this will provide an opportunity for pre-employment training, work experience and a guaranteed interview for up to 40 people.”
She added: “We continue to support BT with their large-scale recruitment of Customer Service staff in Accrington and Blackburn – we offer bespoke support to our customers to help them with the recruitment process.”
A HYNDBURN Apprenticeship and Employment Fair will be held at Accrington Town Hall on Friday, July 7. It will be attended by recruiters and employers including Senator, Forbes Solicitors, Lancashire Constabulary and North Lancashire Training Group.
